Yes, that’s actually my typewriter in the photo. I bought it on my birthday, back in April 2020, during covid. I’ve used it to journal and draft stuff here and there over the past six years, but mostly now, I prefer to write longhand first, then transcribe into a computer, editing as I go. But the ol’ smith corona still looks good on the bookshelf. An inspirational symbol.
I find handwriting even more pleasurable, and private, than the noisy shook shook of the typewriter keys. It’s even more analog and tactile. Sure it’s faster to type on a computer, and that’s a necessary step in writing any kind of manuscript, but there’s a thoughtfulness and deliberateness that accompanies handwriting with ink on paper. I’ve journalled nearly every day for more than a decade. Whether I’m sitting in the living room, on the front porch at sunrise, in a cafe or on vacation, the ritual of daily writing realizes itself in many ways.
This new blog is just one of them.
